What are the dates for the trip?
The dates of the trip are April 3, 2026 – April 9, 2026. If you’re travelling from US, then you should book your ticket for April 2 so that you can arrive on April 3.
Where are we travelling to?
This trip will be in Maputo, Mozambique. No big deal, just globetrotting!
Any must-see places?
Please visit the “Things to Do” page for a starter pack of highlights. This list is not exhaustive, so stretch your fingers, do a little Googling, and uncover even more gems.
What to pack?
The weather in April in Mozambique is pleasant and warm as it is dry season, with temperatures between 77°F and 90°F.
ALL LADIES, make sure to order your fabric pronto so your dress can be perfectly made – custom couture is mandatory for my birthday dinner! Please check the Attire page for more information.
All guests, stick to the color schemes for South Beach and the boat ride – unless you want to be “that person” in everyone’s photos. Peek at the Attire page so you don’t embarrass yourself (or us).
What am I financially responsible for?
You are financially responsible for your flight, hotel, and any incidentals like food (breakfast is included at hotel). The cost of the hotel is listed under the Accommodation page.
The Birthday girl has you covered for South Beach outing, island hopping, and the birthday dinner. Feeling generous? Donations are welcome to help subsidize this fabulous adventure!
Is Maputo safe?
If you’ve traveled internationally before, you know the rules. If you wouldn’t skip down a dark alley at home, don’t do it abroad just because the vibes feel exotic.
Maputo is like any other city. Use common sense, move in packs, and let’s keep the memories cute and not part of a cautionary tale.
Is English spoken in Maputo?
I’ve seen mixed reports: some say Maputo is fairly English-friendly thanks to tourism, while others say Portuguese is mainly spoken. To be safe, download a translation app so you’re never stuck playing charades.
Am I flying into Maputo?
Absolutely! You can fly directly into Maputo, or you can fly into Johannesburg, South Africa and then take a quick 1 hour regional flight. Flying into Johannesburg may save travel time since there are more direct flight options. but be sure to check whether you’ll need a transit visa or regular visa.
What do I present at the airport?
If you are a US passport holder, you will present your passport that will not expire in 6 months, roundtrip flight info, hotel confirmation (please see accommodation page), and $12USD airport fee. You can find more information under the Travel Info page regarding what to bring. If you do not have a US passport, you may need a visa to enter Mozambique.
Can you tell me more about the orphanage?
More details will be provided within the next few weeks. The Most High calls us to to lift up those in need, and what better way than by bringing joy and support to children? This is a chance to make a real difference – and to pay it forward in a way that truly matters.
Should I exchange money for local currency?
Yes, you should exchange some money into the local currency, but don’t go overboard. I’d only change what you’ll need for tips, taxis, and the occasional drink, for everything else, use your credit/debit cards. Bank exchange rates are usually much better than local providers who like to get a little creative with their math. Please inform your bank of your dates of travel and country of travel so that they do not put a block on your card.
Mastercard and Visa are widely accepted, while American Express and Discover are generally less accepted. Some vendors accept USD but please know the rate so that you can pay them properly. To convert from Metical to USD, you take the price of the item (6500 MZN/MT) and divide it by the rate (64 MZN/MT) = $101.56 USD. (6500MZN / 64MZN = $101.56USD). The rates fluctuate so make sure you have the accurate rate.
